Jose Mourinho return to Chelsea backed by Joe Cole as ‘Special One’ named ideal rebuild option

Joe Cole calls for Jose Mourinho Chelsea return as pressure builds on Stamford Bridge leadership
Chelsea’s managerial search has taken another twist, with club legend Joe Cole publicly backing a dramatic return for Jose Mourinho to Stamford Bridge.
With uncertainty still hanging over the dugout, the idea of a third spell for the Portuguese coach is suddenly being spoken about with a straight face rather than just nostalgia.
Mourinho, currently in charge at Benfica and contracted until 2027, is once again being linked with a move away from Portugal.
Despite public assurances from Benfica president Rui Costa about his future, there is a growing sense across European football that another major opportunity could tempt him back into one of the continent’s top leagues.
And while Real Madrid have also been mentioned as a possible destination, Chelsea’s situation has brought his name firmly back into focus in England.
Mourinho back in the frame at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea’s hierarchy are understood to be weighing up several options as they plan for a permanent appointment, with names such as Xabi Alonso, Marco Silva and Andoni Iraola all part of the conversation. But for Joe Cole, the answer feels a lot simpler than the shortlist suggests.
The former winger, who knows the club’s modern history as well as most, has made no secret of where he stands.
“The best move the club could make now, a realistic move as well, is to go to Jose Mourinho. Say that this is what we can do, and just let the man take charge of the club. Just say, ‘rebuild my club for me, we’re going to step back, you get us back on track.’ Give him a long contract, and tell the players and the fans just to take the transition.”
It is not subtle. But then again, Mourinho’s Chelsea story never really was.
“Just let the man take charge”
Cole’s argument is not just about sentiment or history. It is about control and clarity, something he feels the club has lacked in recent times. He believes a return for Mourinho would only work if the structure around him was completely clear from the outset.
“Tell the fans, ‘We’ve given you what you want. Jose is in charge of bringing the players in. Jose is in charge of everything’. So, the fans know where they stand, and the players know where they stand as a group. And then leave it,” Cole added.
It is a vision of Chelsea handing over the keys and stepping back, something modern football rarely allows, especially at elite clubs under constant pressure.
Still, Mourinho’s track record at Stamford Bridge is difficult to ignore. Three Premier League titles and a lasting identity at the club still carry weight among supporters who remember the peak years vividly.
Why Mourinho’s name keeps coming back
The 63-year-old is currently guiding Benfica through an impressive domestic campaign, with reports suggesting they are on course for an unbeaten league season. Yet speculation around his next move refuses to go away.
Chelsea’s own internal debate is complicated by their lack of stability in recent seasons, and Mourinho’s experience at rebuilding teams has naturally made him a talking point again.
Cole believes the idea should not be dismissed lightly, even with Chelsea previously indicating that European competition and long-term planning could make a reunion difficult.
He even pointed to reported interest from Real Madrid as evidence that Mourinho is still viewed as a top-level operator.
“It’s going to take a few years. But I’m pretty sure, in three years, Chelsea will be in a healthier position than they are now. Everyone’s thinking he’s finished, but there’s a reason Real Madrid are looking at him,” he said.
For now, Chelsea’s decision-makers continue to evaluate their options as they attempt to define the next phase of the club’s project. Whether Mourinho is genuinely part of those discussions or simply a nostalgic talking point depends on who you ask around the game.
What is clear is that his name still carries weight whenever Chelsea’s managerial situation becomes uncertain. That in itself says a lot about the legacy he left behind.
