Manchester United linked with shock move for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández amid Real Madrid interest

Manchester United’s summer rebuild is already taking shape, with midfield additions expected to be a key priority — and Enzo Fernández has now been thrown into the mix as a surprise but high-profile option.

Former United striker Louis Saha believes the Chelsea midfielder would be an ideal signing for the club, describing a potential move as a “no-brainer” if the opportunity arises, even with Real Madrid also circling.

United are expected to invest heavily in midfield during the summer window as part of their ongoing squad reshaping under Michael Carrick, who remains in interim charge but is viewed internally as a strong candidate to stay on permanently.

Fernández, meanwhile, has found himself back in the spotlight at Chelsea after a turbulent period. The Argentina international recently returned to the team and scored the decisive goal in their FA Cup semi-final win over Leeds United, reminding everyone of his ability to influence big moments.

Despite that, speculation around his future continues to grow. There are reports suggesting he may be open to a move away from Stamford Bridge, with Real Madrid seen as his preferred destination if he were to leave.

Saha, however, believes Manchester United should be ready to intervene.

Speaking about Fernández, he told Betinia:

“I don’t think Enzo Fernandez has the same style as Bruno Fernandes, but he could still fit into that midfield.”

He went on to highlight the qualities that make the Chelsea midfielder attractive from a United perspective:

“He has the calmness on the ball, the intelligence, and the ability to open up play. He’s not exactly the same as a holding midfielder like Caicedo, but he has aggression and quality.”

Saha didn’t hide his view on the potential deal either, adding:

“It would be a no-brainer, but if he is available, it’s definitely something Manchester United should consider.”

The discussion around Fernández also comes at a time when Chelsea’s wider squad and leadership structure is under scrutiny. Former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood has been critical of the midfielder’s body language during recent matches, particularly in a heavy defeat where he reacted towards travelling supporters.

Sherwood said on Sky Sports:

“He wanted to make a show, this is not someone who I wanted to see with an armband on.”

He continued with a broader criticism of leadership standards within the squad:

“He wants to leave the club. He stuck his chest out, he stood there, he made a stand, mate, make a stand when the game is on, do something about it, lead your players, you’re an individual who plays for himself.”

Sherwood also pointed to deeper issues at Chelsea, questioning consistency and leadership across the team, while stressing the need for more experienced figures within the squad.

While Fernández remains one name being discussed, Manchester United are also tracking other midfield options. One of those is Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni, although former United defender Rio Ferdinand is uncertain whether a deal for the Frenchman would be realistic.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand made no secret of his admiration for Tchouameni, though he admitted uncertainty over whether a deal is even realistic.

“Tchouameni would be great but is he available? I don’t know if he’s available. His experience is huge,” he said, before expanding on what makes the midfielder stand out at the highest level.

Ferdinand pointed to his all-round presence in midfield and calmness in big matches, recalling his display against England at a major tournament.

“He was majestic. He was strong. He was commanding… So I wouldn’t worry about him, I’d be very happy to get him.”

Ferdinand also mentioned other potential targets being considered, including younger Premier League-based options, but stressed availability will ultimately shape United’s decisions more than anything else.

For United, the direction is clear: midfield reinforcements are coming, but the profile of those signings — whether established stars like Fernández or emerging Premier League talents — is still being decided.

As for Fernández, his future remains open-ended. Chelsea have a player capable of producing decisive moments, but external interest and internal questions mean his situation could develop quickly once the transfer window opens.
